Air Duct Replacement

Air Duct Replacement

Your home air conditioning and heating system contain a system of air ducts designed to deliver cool or heated air to all the rooms in your home. All of the air in your home is moved through the duct system 3 – 5 times per hour. In Houston, our newer air duct systems consist of insulated flexible tubes that are hidden away in the attic. While these are much more efficient than the old non-flexible ducts, they last only 15 years and grow more brittle with time. Our duct systems are installed so that they are out of sight and out of mind. As homeowners, we do not put up with leaky pipes, but our duct systems – carrying air instead of water – can leak for years, without anyone knowing it. Builders may cut costs by using ducts that are too small to deliver an adequate air supply, or they may use ducts that are too large if they just have to have those sitting in inventory. Ducts that are too large can siphon off the air that should be going to another room. We see many problems in duct systems. They can be improperly sealed or not sealed at all at the joints or at the end of the supply registers to the rooms. They can be routed in such a way that the air flow is restricted. The ducts can have holes in them from construction or remodeling. Or even have kinks in them which inhibits air flow! And sometimes, the air ducts are just too old and contaminated and cannot be cleaned.

Signs of inefficient duct systems include:
  • Rooms never seem to warm or cool properly.

  • System needs frequent repairs.

  • Home has humidity problems or excessive dust.

  • Cooling system is noisy.

  • You keep your thermostat low all winter and still have high heating bills.

  • Furnace filters are especially dirty.

  • A significant drop in the amount of air coming out of registers

For tax years 2009 – 2011, Energy Tax credits are available to taxpayers for new ducts installed in their primary residence through the end of 2011. This credit is no longer available beginning January 1, 2012. Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009, consumers who purchased new air ducts (and other energy saving items such as solar film and new air conditioners) and had them installed in their primary residences during the 2009 – 2011 time frame were eligible for the credit. The credit was a direct reduction in your income taxes and is available to each taxpayer. IRS form 5695 is the form number used to claim the credit. The credit had various limits and for this scenario the credit is based on the cost of materials only and not the labor.
